Predicting Electricity Imbalance Prices and Volumes: Capabilities and Opportunities

چکیده
Electricity imbalance pricing provides the ultimate incentive for generators and suppliers to contract with one another ahead of time deliver against their obligations. As delivery approaches, traders must judge whether trade-out a position or settle it in balancing market at as-yet-unknown price. Forecasting price (and related volumes) is therefore necessity short-term markets. However, this topic has received surprisingly little attention academic literature despite clear need by practitioners. Furthermore, emergence algorithmic trading demands automated forecasting decision-making, those best able extract predictive information from available data gaining competitive advantage. Here we present case developing methods provide motivating examples Great Britain’s market, demonstrating forecast skill value.

The deregulation of electricity markets has led to higher uncertainty in electricity prices. Electricity, as a commodity, differs from other commodities and financial assets as it is not storable. Among the consequences of this non-storability restriction, the most conspicuous one is the presence of large spikes in electricity prices. Another outcome of the non-storability of electricity is tha...

Introducing a production–based approach, we take into account different attitudes and liabilities of market participants to discuss the equilibrium day–ahead prices on electricity. Conditions ensuring the existence of the equilibrium are given and price distribution is considered. We include a discussion of reasons for high price volatility.
